What is a Chief Petty Officer in the USCG?

A police officer who was awarded a medal of valor, Brett Tremelling joined the United States Coast Guard Reserve. Twice recognized as Enlisted Person of the Year, Brett Tremelling held various positions, including sea marshal, before eventually achieving the rank of chief petty officer (CPO).

The CPO is the Coast Guard’s first rank that possesses enhanced responsibilities and benefits than lower ranks. CPOs must have proven technical skills and the ability to lead. They are generally assigned to handle boat stations and small cutters. Due to the Coast Guard’s smaller size, they have more duties and authority than personnel of corresponding rank in the other military services.

A specific task of CPOs is to train junior commissioned officers and as well as leading petty officers and groups of sailors. CPOs are addressed by the combination of their rank and rating (job), such as Chief Yeoman, Chief Gunner’s Mate, and Chief Quartermaster’s Mate. On board ship, CPOs are provided with private living quarters that are restricted from all other personnel, including officers, unless they are specifically invited.
